I love being a woman! But sometimes, we can get a bad rap if we don’t meet everyone else’s expectations.
Many times, we’re expected to:
Be the “perfect” wife/partner
Be “soccer mom” + PTA President
Build + maintain successful careers or businesses
Volunteer at the church
Contribute to the community
Shop for the family
Cook + Clean
And all without considering our needs, wants, and desires.
But here’s what I say to that…to accomplish this is possible but unrealistic.
While these are all good gestures, we can’t operate in a place of service with putting yourself first! Yes, I said it, PUT YOURSELF FIRST!
Why? Because I believe in the analogy of the oxygen mask scenario on the plane. In case you haven’t heard of it, let me explain.
If you’ve ever flown on a commercial flight, just before take off, an airline attendant will give an overview of the safety procedures in case of an emergency. One of those procedures explains when and how to use the oxygen masks. It normally goes something like this:
“Oxygen and the air pressure are always being monitored. In the event of a decompression, an oxygen mask will automatically appear in front of you. To start the flow of oxygen, pull the mask towards you. Place it firmly over your nose and mouth, secure the elastic band behind your head, and breathe normally. Although the bag does not inflate, oxygen is flowing to the mask. If you are traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask on first, and then assist the other person. Keep your mask on until a uniformed crew member advises you to remove it.”
Did you catch that? You’re being specifically advised to help yourself before the person the needs assistance. Why? Because you can’t help someone else unless you help yourself first.
And this is the same perspective I hold in terms of using your gift to serve others.
In order to be of help to those we serve, we must take the time to better ourselves.
If you are serious about building a successful business, you must put yourself first or you won’t be any good to your clients or customers. Here’s what could happen:
You won’t get enough sleep;
You’ll eat a poor diet;
Your energy will be drained;
The delivery of your services will suffer;
You’ll make commitments that aren’t aligned with your gift + talents;
Your business will not profit and will operate in lack;
And worst of all, you can’t serve those who need you most.
So today, I’m challenging you to apply habits into your personal life that will flow into your business:
Pray or Meditate daily;
Eat foods that will fuel your body;
Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night;
Exercise a minimum of 3x a week (walk, run, dance);
And as a result, you mind, body, spirit, and those you serve will thank you.
Why am I stressing the importance of this?
Because as you step out on faith + launch your dream to the world, I want you to succeed! And in order to succeed, you must take care of yourself. There’s no way around this. I’ve been in a place where I wasn’t taking care of myself and I was miserable. I don’t want to see you go through this. My desire is to see you use your undeniable gift to build a dream business online. There are people out there that need exactly what you have and that’s why by NOT putting yourself first so you can use your gift to serve others is selfish!
This week’s assignment: Grab your Dream Journal. Take some time to reflect on what you’re currently doing to put yourself first and how it relates to the state of your life + business. Now, write it down.
Now, answer this question: What’s ONE thing you can do TODAY to put yourself first?
Afterward, feel free to leave your comments below or head over to my Facebook page and share your thoughts. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Until next time!
